Comedy Café Theatre: New Act Night
Watching each act can be exciting because the audience does not know what they are in for – the night brings constant surprises. Bearing in mind that everyone has a different sense of humour, there is a lot of variation among the competitors. While the audience roars with laughter many times throughout the night, some of these comedians are just starting their career so there were a few moments of booing and awkward silences. Anyone can sign up to perform, which means there will be acts that are not funny. They waste the audience’s time and someone more entertaining could have filled their spot.
If you are worried about showing up on a Wednesday where none of the acts tickle your fancy, the regular host MC Jimmy James Jones, will make the night worth it. His engagement with the audience, witty banter and impeccable lip-syncing skills will make rolling on the floor in laughter tempting (if you can get past how grubby the floors are). The downside is he rarely changes up his act. If you become a regular Wednesday-goer you will eventually grow tired of his Whitney Houston skit.
In addition to the young blooded comedians, a range of more experienced acts grace the stage every week. Jason Patterson talks about troubles as a chubby child, Luke Montague (who you might recognise from The Undateables ) expounds on living with Tourette’s, Kate Lucas delivers her act with the help of an acoustic guitar, and Irish owner of the 25-year-old establishment – Noel Faulkner – provides the audience with insight on life after 50. They make regular appearances throughout the year, so if you like what you hear, the club’s What’s On page has updates on their upcoming shows.
New Act Night is a sell-out event every week – and rightly so—it’s free. The evening includes lively entertainment, a great atmosphere and lots of laughs and all for the price of nothing.
